To secure funding for School Chaplains

Many local people have approached me with their concerns about possibly losing school Chaplains from our schools and our communities.

I am a strong advocate of the National School Chaplaincy Program and have started a petition calling on the Rudd Government to state its intentions regarding this vital community program.  We must kept the pressure on the Government in our quest to not only secure on-going funding for the NSCP but also provide reassurance to the 1,915 schools in which the program operates that they will not lose their highly valued and sought after school chaplains.

Thus far, the response from the Government has been to extend funding for the program, at a reduced level, until the end of 2011, after which there may be no more funding despite the program’s social benefits, sound administration and strong community support.  This is not unacceptable.

Therefore, the Petition available below has been updated to reflect Mr Abbott’s recent announcement of on-going Coalition support, as well as the Prime Minister’s announcement of more limited support.  If elected, the Coalition has pledged to continue funding the program in its current form, and at its current level, of $165 million over 3 years.

Copies of this petition can also be downloaded here.  The petition can be photocopied, however all signatures returned to me must be original and on the supplied form.

"Affordable Housing Development" at Hansford Road, Coombabah

You may have read about Stuart's efforts on this issue in the Gold Coast Sun or in a recent letter sent to all Coombabah residents.

Many local people have expressed their concerns to Stuart regarding a proposed 134 unit three-story development in Hansford Road.  Residents have approached him concerned about the impact this may have on the local area, especially considering the site is only zoned for 60 units that have a maximum of two stories.

Click here to read the letter as sent to all residents, or click here to read the Sun article of 12 August.

Stuart encourages all Coombabah residents to attend an upcoming public meeting and sign a petition regarding the legislation governing the National Rental Affordability Scheme.  Be sure to download the petition and return it to Stuart's office.
